30 Years of Integrity & Compliance
In July of 1996, GeneTree Incorporated, Biopharma Institute’s parent company, was born from a vision that combined scientific innovation with entrepreneurial drive. Its founder, Terrence Carmichael, had just earned his master’s degree in molecular medicine and genetics from Wayne State University School of Medicine, and while working for a fast-growing biotech firm in Los Angeles, he sharpened his business acumen through night classes in business development at UCLA’s Westwood campus.
Fueled by equal parts curiosity and ambition, Terry and three of his UCLA classmates drafted a business plan for a pioneering venture: a company that would bring DNA testing directly to consumers. Their concept was revolutionary for its time—launching through the newly emerging Internet, providing proof-of-concept via e-commerce, and ultimately expanding to the shelves of drugstores like Walgreens, CVS, and Rite Aid.
Within a year, Terry had secured the GeneTree.com domain, incorporated the company, and built a functioning website. Vendor partnerships were established, advertising campaigns launched, and the bold strategy took form: free DNA collection kits offered online, with customers paying only upon submission of their samples for testing. The model worked. Kits were ordered, returned with specimens, and revenues were growing. GeneTree had proven that the direct-to-consumer DNA testing market had real traction.

Growth and Expansion
As the company matured, its services broadened to include genetic predisposition and ancestry testing, and GeneTree relocated to Silicon Valley, the epicenter of innovation. By September 2001, GeneTree’s assets—including its brand and services—were acquired by Sorenson Genomics in Salt Lake City, Utah. Under Terry’s continued leadership, the GeneTree-branded paternity testing products grew rapidly and, within six (6) years, were available on the shelves of major U.S. drugstores. Though later rebranded under Identigene, the DNA test kits that Terry had envisioned remained a mainstay in pharmacies nationwide—an enduring legacy of GeneTree’s early work.
Reinvention and a New Direction
After the asset sale in 2001, GeneTree remained as a corporate shell, awaiting its next purpose. The breakthrough came through chance and connection: Terry met the founder of GeneEd Incorporated, another Silicon Valley company developing eLearning courses training on GxP compliance and specific therapeutic areas for major pharmaceutical clients like Amgen and AstraZeneca.
Seeing opportunity, Terry proposed a bold idea—take GeneEd’s corporate compliance training courses and make them available to any professional, anywhere, on-demand. It was a natural evolution of GeneTree’s DNA: combining science, education, and the power of e-commerce to deliver immediate, scalable solutions.
GeneTree and GeneEd struck a deal, and GeneTree began building an online learning platform and e-commerce-enabled learning management system (LMS). The new division of GeneTree, Biopharma Institute, launched in 2003, offering GxP compliance and regulatory training to professionals and organizations across the biotech and pharmaceutical industries. For the first time, training managers could not only enroll employees into courses but also track their progress and maintain training records online—a true innovation at the time.
Whether producing food, cosmetics, medical devices, or pharmaceuticals, manufacturers bear responsibility for the safety of their consumers. By delivering effective, documented training and consistently reinforcing regulatory requirements, companies demonstrate their commitment to producing reliable, high-quality, and safe products.
Ever since its inception, Biopharma Institute has provided convenient, efficient, and effective training solutions for professionals in the pharmaceutical, clinical research, biotechnology, and medical device industries. Its comprehensive portfolio includes online courses, live and recorded seminars, books, and other training tools designed to ensure employees perform their roles in full compliance with applicable standards. Over the years, Biopharma Institute has proudly delivered training to professionals at thousands of corporations across the United States and around the world.
In August 2022, Biopharma Institute was honored to be awarded a U.S. government contract to provide GxP training for U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs employees working in its clinical research and drug manufacturing facility. This contract has been renewed annually for the past four years and remains active for the 2025/26 fiscal year.
