Short Biography – Kelvin, William Thomson, Lord (1824-1907)

Lord Kelvin was a Scottish mathematician and physicist who is noted for the early search carried out in static electricity and magnetic phenomena. Kelvin’s research in the transmission of electric current was to lead to the laying down of submarine cables, the ultimate one being that laid down on the floor of the Atlantic. (It was for this work that Kelvin was knighted in 1866.) Lord Kelvin’s work went beyond pure science; he built instruments for his work shop, such as the amp?re-meter, the volt-meter and the watt-meter.
