Mendel, Gregor Johann (1822-84) Short Biography – Mendel, Gregor Johann (1822-84) Mendel was an Austrian biologist, who, through his remarkable researches on hybridity in plants, established that there does exist, in living things, dominant and recessive characters (Mendelian Law). “His principle of factorial inheritance and the quantitative investigation of single characters have been the basis of modern genetics.” (Chambers.) From this theory of heredity came the theory of organic evolution, which in turn led to an understanding of “the language of the bees, the homing of birds and the behaviour of apes, – leading towards a comprehensive picture of the evolution, the individual development and the working of mind.” (Sir Julian Huxley, New Bottles, preface.]
